An approach built on living books rather than textbooks, short focused lessons, narration instead of worksheets, nature study, and exposure to art and music. The underlying claim is that children are whole persons who deserve rich material, not simplified summaries.

The student tells back what they just read or heard, in their own words. It is the method's primary assessment tool and replaces most comprehension questions. Oral narration starts around six; written narration is introduced later and gradually becomes composition. It is harder than it sounds and it works.

Short by design. Ten to fifteen minutes per subject in the early years, extending gradually with age, on the principle that a child's full attention for a short period is worth more than divided attention for an hour. Elementary days typically run two to three hours total.

Narration and nature journals make good portfolio evidence, but the method itself does not generate hours logs or attendance records. If your state counts days or hours, track them separately. Reading logs and narration notebooks work well as the work-sample side of a portfolio.
