Story of the World makes history come alive across all four ancient-to-modern volumes. IEW builds structured writing skills that pay dividends for years. Common questions

Frequently asked

How many hours a day should elementary homeschool take?

Two to three hours of focused work is typical for grades three through five, and that usually covers more ground than a full school day does. There is no class transition time, no waiting on twenty-five other students, and no attendance-taking. If your day is running five hours, look at whether the curriculum is padded rather than assuming you are behind.

What subjects are actually required in elementary?

It varies by state. The common core set is reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies, and some states add health, physical education, or state history. About half the states name required subjects at all. Check your state's list before building the year around assumptions.

Should I use one program for all subjects at this age?

It is a reasonable choice in elementary, when the subjects are still simple enough that a single publisher can do them all competently. Many families run an all-in-one for content subjects and choose math separately, since math is where fit matters most and where the weakest link in a bundle usually shows up.

How do I teach multiple elementary children at once?

Combine the content subjects and separate the skill subjects. History, science, art, and read-alouds work well taught to several ages at once with different output expected from each child. Math and reading have to be individual because they are sequential. This is the single biggest time saver in a multi-child homeschool.
