Is an all-in-one curriculum a good idea?

It is a good idea when your bandwidth is the constraint. All-in-one programs remove the work of assembling and sequencing subjects, which matters most in a first homeschool year, during a move or new baby, or when you are teaching several children at once. The tradeoff is that you accept the publisher's choices in every subject.

What if the all-in-one is strong in some subjects and weak in others?

That is the normal case, and it is fine to substitute. Most families who use a boxed curriculum swap out one subject, usually math or writing, and keep the rest. Doing that does not mean the program failed. Plan for it rather than treating the box as all or nothing.

Are all-in-one programs more expensive?

Not necessarily, but the cost arrives in one bill rather than spread across six purchases, which makes it feel larger. Compare the bundle against what you would spend assembling the same subjects separately, and check whether materials are reusable for younger siblings. Some programs are consumable per child, which changes the math for larger families.

Do colleges care whether we used a boxed curriculum?

No. Admissions readers care about the transcript, course descriptions, and test scores, not the publisher. What matters is that you can describe what each course covered. If you used an all-in-one for high school, keep the scope and sequence so you can write accurate course descriptions later.
