Best Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum
14 curricula in this guide
Kindergarten and early elementary (K-2) homeschool curricula focus on phonics, beginning reading, early math, and lots of read-aloud time. Look for programs that are short, engaging, and require minimal seatwork — children this age learn through play, manipulatives, and hands-on activity at least as much as through worksheets.
Our top picks balance gentle pacing with solid foundations. The Good and the Beautiful offers a particularly strong early elementary experience with free PDFs. All About Reading is the gold standard for beginning phonics. Math-U-See's Primer and Alpha levels work especially well for kinesthetic learners. Resist the urge to over-schedule — 1-2 hours of focused instruction is plenty for a kindergartener.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Does my kindergartner need a formal curriculum?
Often not. In most states compulsory attendance does not begin at five, and a great deal of what matters at this age is read-alouds, play, conversation, and fine motor work. If a structured program helps you feel organized, use a light one. If it is producing tears in October, that is information about the timing, not the child.
How long should a kindergarten homeschool day be?
Most families land between 45 minutes and 90 minutes of focused work, split into short blocks. That usually feels too short to parents coming from a school model, but sustained attention at five is measured in minutes. Reading aloud, which is doing real work, does not have to count against that.
Should I teach reading in kindergarten?
Introduce it, and let readiness set the pace. Some five year olds read fluently and some are not ready until seven, and both are normal. Explicit phonics is the most reliable approach when a child is ready. Pushing before readiness is the most common way to build reading resistance that takes years to undo.
Do I have to report or track anything for kindergarten?
It depends on the state. Several states do not require anything until age six or seven, while others expect notice once you enroll. Check your state's compulsory age range before assuming you are or are not on the hook.
