Best Literature-Based Homeschool Curriculum
6 curricula in this guide
Literature-based homeschool curricula teach history, geography, character, and worldview through carefully chosen living books rather than textbooks. The reading list itself is the curriculum, supported by teacher's guides that schedule readings, discussion questions, and projects.
Sonlight is the granddaddy of the category — Christian, literature-based, full curriculum spanning PreK through high school. BookShark is the secular spinoff. Build Your Library offers a leaner, more affordable secular Charlotte Mason approach. These programs require a lot of read-aloud time with younger children, so factor your bandwidth into the decision.

Common questions
Frequently asked
What is a literature-based curriculum?
One that teaches content subjects through real books rather than textbooks. History and science come from historical fiction, biography, and well-written nonfiction, usually organized around a period or theme, with the reading list doing the work a textbook would otherwise do.
Does literature-based work for multiple ages?
It is one of its main strengths. The whole family can share a read-aloud and a period of history while each child produces output at their own level. Skill subjects such as math and phonics still have to be individual, but the content subjects combine well.
How much reading aloud is involved?
A lot, and that is the tradeoff. These programs typically assume a parent reading aloud daily, often for a substantial block. Families who love this find it the best part of the day. Families who dread it should be honest about that before buying, because the program depends on it.
Will my student miss content compared to a textbook?
Coverage is usually narrower and deeper. A textbook surveys more names and dates; a literature approach spends longer in fewer places and tends to produce better retention and more interest. If standardized testing on broad coverage matters in your state, check the scope against what is tested.
