What is the best homeschool math curriculum?

There isn't one. Math is the subject where fit matters most, and the same program that finally makes it click for one child will make another miserable. The real question is which approach fits: spiral programs review constantly, mastery programs stay on one concept until it's owned, and video-based programs teach the lesson so you don't have to. Pick the approach first, then the program.

What is the difference between spiral and mastery math?

Spiral programs introduce a small idea each day and then mix it into a problem set drawn from everything taught so far, so review never stops. Mastery programs spend weeks or a whole level on one concept until the student demonstrates they have it, then move on. Spiral suits students who forget without repetition. Mastery suits students who get frustrated jumping between topics.

What if I am not confident teaching math myself?

Choose a program that teaches the lesson for you. Video-based curricula deliver instruction on screen and often grade automatically, which keeps you in the role of checking the gradebook rather than explaining long division. This is the single most common reason families switch math programs, and it is a legitimate reason to pick on format rather than rigor.

When should we switch math curricula?

Switch when the problem is the program, not the child. Persistent tears, a student who understands the concept but can't get through the format, or a parent dreading the lesson daily are all fair signals. Mid-year switching is fine in math as long as you check placement rather than assuming the same grade number. Avoid switching just because a new program is popular.

How many hours a week should we spend on math?
