Does Pennsylvania require testing?

Pennsylvania requires a written evaluation each year, based on an interview with your child and a review of the portfolio. The evaluator can be a licensed clinical psychologist, a school psychologist, a Pennsylvania certified teacher with two years of grading experience at the level they evaluate, a nonpublic school teacher or administrator with two years of Pennsylvania teaching experience in the last 10 years at that level, or anyone else the superintendent approves in advance. The evaluator certifies that an appropriate education is occurring, and that certification goes to the superintendent by June 30.

What kind of assessment Pennsylvania accepts

Pennsylvania accepts a professional evaluation: a certified teacher or qualified evaluator reviews your child's work and progress and provides a written assessment. This is more flexible than a timed test and suits kids who don't test well.

When assessments happen

In Pennsylvania, assessment is expected annually. Put the window on your calendar so testing or evaluation doesn't sneak up at year end, and plan to keep the result with your records once it's done.

If scores fall short

A low score usually isn't an automatic problem. States that require testing typically ask that you keep the results and, if scores fall below a set level, work with your child and reassess the following year rather than ending the homeschool. Check Pennsylvania's specific threshold, but a single low result rarely undoes your homeschool on its own.

Keeping your assessment records

Keep every score report or evaluation with the date and the test or evaluator's name. Pennsylvania may ask to see them, and they're useful for your own records and for college applications later. Homeschool Fox stores results alongside your hours and activity log so everything lives in one place.
