Withdrawing from public school

How to Withdraw From Public School in Wyoming

Pulling your child out of public school in Wyoming starts with a letter to the school. The steps are below, with a free Wyoming withdrawal letter you can print today and the timing that keeps the district from marking your child absent in between.

How withdrawal works in Wyoming

If you're pulling a child out of public school, notify the district that your child is enrolled in a home-based educational program. W.S. 21-4-102(c) sets no form, so a short letter works and gives you a copy to keep. A parent who doesn't notify the district has to meet in person with a school counselor or administrator and give written consent to the withdrawal. If your child has never been enrolled in public school, you don't file anything to start.

Step by step

  1. 1

Confirm your child is currently enrolled

This guide is for moving a currently enrolled student to homeschooling. If your child has never attended public school in Wyoming (a kindergartner you're starting at home, for example), there's usually nothing to withdraw from. A quick call to the school confirms their status.

  2. 2

Send a written withdrawal letter to the school

Wyoming doesn't require a formal withdrawal letter or notice of intent to move a child from public school to homeschooling. Even so, a short written notification to the current school is a good idea so the district can close out attendance records and avoid truancy follow-ups. Rather than hand-writing the withdrawal letter, Homeschool Fox produces a pre-formatted PDF ready to send to the district.

    File your notice of intent

It depends on where your child is now. Wyoming asks for nothing to begin homeschooling a child who is not enrolled in public school. If you are withdrawing a child from public school, you notify your local school district as part of that withdrawal.

  4. 4

Keep dated copies for your records

Save a copy of the withdrawal letter and anything you file, noting the date you sent it. If the district ever asks about attendance, dated proof that you withdrew on time is what closes the question.

  5. 5

    Set up your homeschool

With the withdrawal handled, the rest is starting your homeschool: planning subjects, setting an hours or days target, and keeping records. The Wyoming homeschool guide covers what the law asks for from here.
